Pedagogy:


The students were mentored on the research methodological skills by engaging them in the various forms of pedagogy like, Oral History and its documentation conducting the surveys on various issues of Social Sciences, making the documentaries, developing analytical and evaluating process of learning, field surveys, workshops beyond the defined syllabus, Seminars, Lecture Series, field trips to give them beyond classroom experiences, Summer school, motivating and encouraging them to participate in various inter-collegiate competitions, organising career guidance sessions etc.
The sessions of mentoring was conducted outside institution as well in other institutions, in the form of conducting workshops, Training programs and lecture series on Corporate Trainings, Leadership skills, Interview and Group discussion Techniques, Lecture series on Human Rights and other contemporary issues.
The purpose of mentoring is shaping the young minds and assisting them in channelizing their energy towards the overall development by practicing a holistic approach towards the commitment of teaching.


Report of 2019-2020:

Title: The Unheard voices of the Great Divide: An Oral History project on the Partition of 1947.

Activity: Oral History Documentation
No. of Students involved: 5 students.

Result: The main aim of this project was to document and ensure preservation of the history of the Partition of India by interviewing persons who migrated from present day Pakistan to India during the Partition. This project was an attempt to trace the long-term impact of the partition on the society, culture, gender, caste and urban spaces, felt, even after seven decades.

Report of 2018-2019:

Title: Mapping of the structures featuring in the BMC’s heritage list

Activity: Mapping and field research
Number of students involved: 20 students

Results: The areas mapped were covered on the basis of the BMC wards with a total of 8 maps being prepare at the end, of places including the Sitladevi Temple at Dadar, the Hume Memorial Church at Byculla, the Mahakali Caves, dilapidated buildings of mills in Dadar and Parel and the Magen David Synagogue at Byculla.

Title: The Audit of the sites under Archaeological Survey of India

Activity: Survey

Results: 1000 people surveyed



Title: The teaching and learning of history across boards and grades in the schools of Mumbai

Title: The prominent places in Bombay that featured in the Indian Freedom Struggle

Activity: Documentary
Number of students involved: 4 students.
Results: A 14-minute documentary prepared, featuring Azad Maidan, Girgaum Chowpatty, Mani Bhavan, Gokuldas Tejpal Hall, the August Kranti Maidan and the Gateway of India.



Title: The changes in the function of the censor board with the evolution of Indian cinema

Activity: Survey
Number of students involved: 5 students.
Results: 3817 people were successfully surveyed at a number of public and private places such as schools, colleges, trains, offices and residential areas.



Title: The Partition of India

Activity: Documentary
Number of students involved: 5 students.
Results: 31 people from communities such as the Parsis, Muslims, Sikhs and Sindhis were interviewed from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, with the objective of providing primary insights into the lives of those affected by the event. The documentary lasted 52 minutes.



Title: The Naga Separatist Movement

Activity: Documentary
Number of students involved: 1 student.
Results: 3 esteemed experts were interviewed for a documentary that aimed to document the perspectives of the Nagas themselves and to observe their participation in the movement by taking into account their valuable opinions. The documentary lasted 33 minutes.



Title: The 1975 Emergency declared under Indira Gandhi

Activity: Documentary
Number of students involved: 3 students.
Results: 6 experts were interviewed who included civilians, historians, religious heads and political party members in order to gain the insights of those who witnessed the Emergency themselves. The documentary lasted 14 minutes.



Title: Separatism and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act

Activity: Documentary
Number of students involved: 4 students.
Results: 5 people were interviewed for a documentary that lasted 40 minutes and was made with the objective of bringing to light a balanced perspective that contained the insights of both, the armed forces as well as that of the civilians who either sympathized or were victimized by the insurgency.


Report of 2017-2018:

The Career Guidance Seminar for the students of the department on 23 rd February, 2018. The speakers were Mr. Navin. Jambhulkar (I.PO.S) on preparation for the Civil services and other competitive examinations, Prof. Elvina Pereira of St.Xavier’s Teacher’s Training College on career options in academics, Mr.Chaitanya. Marpakwar from Mumbai Mirror on career options in Journalism, Mr. Prasanna from Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralay (CSMVS) gave insights on careers in museology, Ms. Deepti from the startup Past Perfect on the career options in the documentation and archives, Ms. Vrunda. Pathare from Godrej Archives on taking up archival science as a career option, Ms. Khushboo. Sheikh from Max Mueller Institute of Foreign Languages and she spoke on career options in foreign languages.

Conducted the ‘Train and the Trainer ‘Workshop on Right to Information Act and invited Mr. Sailesh Gandhi, RTI activist for students to get the exposure of Right to Information Act, 1 st and 9 th September 2008.

Led the student’s contingent for the Inter- Collegiate competition on Depicting the History through Cartoons, at National College, Bandra we won 1 st Prize.
Organized the field trip to Kanheri caves with Dr. Binda as an expert, students were given insight of the Brahmi Script on, 21 st August 2003.

The Field trip ,Arnala fort near Virar, Maharashtra, 12 th July 1998. Field trip to study the ancient Buddhist caves at Kanheri and also to identify the Buddhist architectural style of Western India.

Organized the Field trip to the Forts of Deccan. The students visited the following forts Sinhgarh, Pratapgadh, Raigadh, Panhala, Shaniwarwada and the Kelkar museum. The onsite presentation was done by the students on the forts, 30 th September - 4 th October 1998.
